Last night as my toddler was headed out the door for supper at church, she went out, pulled the door almost shut, then flung it back open quick, leaned inside and said with great gusto, passion & sincerity:
“MOM!! I BELIEVE in you!”
She quickly walked back out and slammed the door shut on her way.
Wait a second…I thought, what exactly just happened here?
I paused.
My next thought was “WOW!” followed by tears of joy. Obviously not because she slammed the door, I swear we’re trying to teach her better.

First of all, I don’t even know what she meant by that, but it felt good to hear and know that someone believed in me.
Secondly, she didn’t wait around to be praised for being kind, she just did it and it was over.
Learn from this little one, folks. Go out there into the world and say all the kind things, without needing thanks.
This is simple; you don’t need to overthink it. Just say whatever good things you feel to the people you feel you want to say them too.
Also, BELIEVE in people. Let them know that YOU believe in THEM. You have no idea how far that small gesture can and will go.
My kids hear me praise cashiers or compliment them all the time. It’s not a fake thing; it’s an intentional decision I made years ago to start pointing out the good, even if it seems silly.
“Your earrings are beautiful”, “You were so quick at ringing up my groceries, thank you”, “I appreciate you getting me more water” (better than my typical halfhearted “thanks” and lack of eye contact, when the waitress comes back to the table with my refill- I should know better, I’ve worked in food service).
Your kindness is needed in this world. Go out and spread it wide and far, like a wet dog spreads water after a bath when it shakes off. Picture that a minute… Yes, that is exactly the kind of joy spreading I’m talkin’ about. Get ‘er done!

If you have a Quotable Kid, like I know I do (x3) consider getting the book titled My Quotable Kid. It’s a little journal where you can record the sweet and funny things your kiddos say. Trust me, moms of littles, I know you THINK you’ll remember every bit of it, but I can assure you as the mother of a teenager, there are things you’ll forget. Write it all down. This book also makes a great gift for parents with children of all ages, not just babies and toddlers.
