Swallow Coffeehouse in Lake Mills, IA

The highlight of last week was making a quick stop at Swallow Coffeehouse in Lake Mills, Iowa.  Seriously, it was so good that I am still smiling about it.

It was our very first time and happened on a whim as Mr. Awesome and I were in town to pick up our contacts and glasses just down the block.

I’m sold on that place! I loved every single bit of it. I couldn’t wait to share about it on Instagram. If you’re ever in the North Iowa area, add this place to your list of things to do/see.

I really think the Lord is going to use this space in BIG ways, I can just feel it, friends!

I see this as a community gathering place for moms and their babies to connect with each other while the momma sips coffee and reads a book to her little, or parents to connect with other parents for a Saturday morning chat before their day gets busy.

Yes, that’s my oldest son in the children’s area. Sorry, Buddy! The younger one was too quick for a picture here.

The children’s area looks like it was thoughtfully curated to encourage imagination and play. The color scheme and toys are inspiring. I grabbed the book If you Give a Mouse a Brownie from their shelf to read to my kiddos while they sipped chugged, lemonade. This is one “If you Give a” book that I don’t remember reading yet. Gosh, those books are so good, aren’t they?

This could be a place for husbands and wives to carve out intentional time to talk about what’s on their hearts, or their grocery list. A place for friends or old classmates to catch up. A weekly gathering place for any sort of group, really.

Mr. Awesome is my forever coffee date that doesn’t actually order a coffee. Ha! He likes the smell of it though, and I’m grateful for the time we have together, no matter what he’s drinking.

A major bonus about this place is that there were multiple tables and seating areas here that could accommodate our whole family. That’s hard to come by, folks. We chose the cute dining table above.

I cannot wait to take our oldest daughter here (she was working). I’m pretty sure she will go for an end spot on that comfy looking couch.

If Mr. Awesome and I get a chance to sneak over here on our own I’m grabbing our Bible study and requesting we sit in these adorable seats.

Oh hey, while we’re talking coffee, do you remember that giveaway last week? Out of 176 entries, Mandi S. was the winner! Woohoo! I’ve e-mailed you, Mandi. You’ll have a new coffee mug heading your way soon!

If you want to stay in the loop here about the next giveaway you can subscribe to the newsletter.

I promise to never send more than one e-mail a week from the mailing list, and honestly, it’s more like monthly, because 1. I’m busy raising a family here. 2. No one needs more digital clutter.

Oh my, did I even share a picture of my drink? I don’t think I did. Sorry about that! The flavor was perfect! I believe this was called the Lovebird. Their menu is not overwhelming, which I seriously appreciate. I freeze up when I’m trying to order off of a menu for the first time, especially when ordering for a whole family. Thankfully the barista was extremely friendly and helpful! I’ll just keep on ordering the Lovebird from here on out. Ha! Seriously, I probably will.

PS. Check out their hours, they are super! You can find them on Instagram and Facebook.

Hey Friend! I am truly so glad that you’re here today!

At A Slightly Better Wife, I share about faith, homemaking, homeschooling, and marriage—along with my passion for creating a non-toxic, intentional home. Life isn’t about perfection, but I believe in making small, meaningful choices each day to do things slightly better than before.

My love for simple living and homemaking was deeply shaped by my grandparents. I have the best childhood memories of being in the kitchen with my Grandma Edna, learning the beauty of home-cooked meals and a well-tended home. My Grandpa Link’s storytelling and wisdom instilled in me the value of faith, family, and slowing down to listen during the little moments that make life rich. Their influence is woven into who I am today and I’m so grateful for that.

I’m a wife, a momma of 5, and a homemaker at heart. My husband and I met young, just days after my 18th birthday, and we quickly (like within a week) knew that forever was in our plans.

Together, we built our home on the edge of town, where we’re raising and homeschooling our children while embracing a simple, purposeful life in the city.

Here, you’ll find encouragement for your marriage, practical tips for homemaking, and inspiration to cultivate a home filled with faith and love. Whether you’re looking for a recipe, a fresh perspective, or just a place to feel understood, I hope you’ll stay awhile and explore.

Let’s pursue slightly better together!
