Sunshine + Books + Beverages. It’s a beautiful morning, friends. I picked up a hymnal in a box of free books at our homeschool co-op last week and I’ve enjoyed reading through it and humming/singing familiar tunes.
I also quickly realized how many hymns I enjoy have verses I never really knew. Ha!
When I was a little girl, my family attended the Methodist church that I’d later leave, and then come back to be married in.
One particular Sunday I was standing on the pew (yes, on) in the balcony with my mom’s arm gently wrapped around me while she held that beautiful book and sang sweetly with the rest of the church.
I loved music and wanted desperately to sing along to the hymns, but I couldn’t read the words.
I put my head down and stared at my shiny church shoes.
I wished to be grown and was so disappointed in myself!
I distinctly remember my mom leaning over and whispering in my ear, if you don’t know the words, just hum. I gave a confused look, then she hummed a little to show me how.
I got it, and this was fun!
In hindsight, as I think of the way she smiled at me and snickered, I must have been humming way too loud, and it may have made her equal parts embarrassed and proud.
I still find myself humming hymns throughout the day. Especially, “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”. I’ll be sitting in a drive-thru, pushing a cart, or washing a sink full of dishes and realize I’m humming that same tune every single time, no matter where I am.
Praise His name, I’m fixed up-on it.
