Here’s a post I found in my draft folder from over a year ago. I must have felt too ashamed to share it at the time, but hey, it’s Real Life! Not that I need to justify it to you, but:
- This was during our early nursing days with the baby and I was dealing with low milk supply, extreme sleep deprivation (this not sarcasm, I slept maybe an hour a day and it wasn’t good sleep), and some yucky depression.
- Our sweet youngest daughter had JUST become a middle child. Middle children now hold a special place in my heart.
- Folks, we were in survival mode through and through, okay?
Here’s the post I had written:
My sweet youngest daughter has been addicted to watching YouTube videos. The instant gratification of playing on a tablet turns her into a monster when she is done (which is absolutely not her typical personality). It’s like she thinks we should all respond to her the way her tablet does when she clicks something…INSTANTLY!
It is so bad that even after I deleted the app, she figured out how to watch videos in the browser on the tablet by saying “Watch YouTube Videos!!” into the voice search bar.
What the heck, people?! Is she a genius driven to get what she wants, or is this a sign of trouble?
To be very honest with you, I am terribly inconsistent because sometimes I let her, and sometimes I say absolutely not. Or I will tell her she can have 10 minutes, and give her 30, or more because I’m so.dang.tired. It just results in lots of whining and fit throwing… for both of us when she plays unsupervised.
She is barely five, I don’t think it is unreasonable to say she has to sit with me while she’s on the tablet. But, she refuses and prefers to hide in a bedroom to watch people open toys on YouTube…
I run a tight ship when it comes to children with electronics, ask my teenager if you don’t believe me. This has just gotten out of control though!
This girl was on a mission to find her tablet, but it’s locked in the safe – so she’s not finding it!
Whatever battle you’re handling mama, big or small, stay strong. Because I AM STAYING STRONG!
