In October of 2016, nearly four years ago, I snapped this picture with my camera and jotted down these words down in my journal:
“Adventures!!!! How gorgeous is this sunset bursting through the field of sunflowers? We visited my SIL’s home in the country; The kids ran through the flowers and got to explore the massive fields and trails around their back pond. We left with tomatillos (which I’d never heard of before today), two bags full of basil to make pesto (& their recipe), watermelon, salsa, long stalks of bright flowers, a few bug bites, great big smiles, and new memories.
Don’t give up getting together with family. Just don’t. Nothing compares to having them near and sharing stories with them.”
Now more then ever I feel a strong call to not give up getting together. GATHER THE PEOPLE! Funny story, I put this on a shirt just before many states called for a lockdown due to covid-19. I spent a week wondering if I’d get in trouble for wearing this. It was never meant to be a statement to go against government recommendations, it was truly born from my lifelong desire and passion to build community.
Anyway, back to getting together! It can be a physical meet-up, a family group chat to drop in on (easy to setup- message me if you need help), a weekly (or biweekly) video call with the grandparents and/or cousins, a phone call, or a sweet note sent through the mail.
Whatever it is, however it is, just don’t give up. We really need each other.
