If you’re the parent of a teen, those years are so hard. The hormones, the decisions around the upcoming transition into adulthood, thinking of what life will be like in a few years (both of you), learning how to handle more independence.
My best advice is don’t be your child’s biggest bully; be their advocate. I know the “experts” say don’t be their friend, but I’m telling you, you can be friendly AND be their parent. Love them well, help them through the awkward stages and hard transition into adulthood.
Build trust by being trustworthy. Keep your word.
It’s not about you. It’s about helping them succeed in life.
As they grow up, they will keep trusting you and coming to you with the hard things and you’ll be their longest-running friendship. Generations will be blessed because of the work you put in today.
Be a good parent, that’s all.
One of the best ways to make your child feel secure, no matter their age, is to love your spouse well. That starts with honesty and serving them well. Please don’t skip this.
Ps. It’s October 2026, I found this unpublished in the archives, probably from when my oldest was a teenager many years ago. I thought it deserved a permanent place on the blog.
