When we built our home 11 years ago, we included a great closet in the family room. At first, we used it for storing books, board games, and all sorts of miscellaneous items. But as our family grew—and so did our desire to host friends and family around the table—we needed to rethink our space.
About 8 years ago, we made the best decision ever: we claimed the family room closet and turned it into our kitchen pantry!

My Top 5 Pantry Closet Tips
-
Use a Shoe Organizer on the Door
Perfect for granola bars (I love the chocolate chip cookie dough LÄRABAR!), raisin boxes, single-serve nut packs, and more. Tip: Keep kid-friendly snacks within reach, and save the good chocolate for higher up. -
Store Boxes Up High
Stack boxes neatly to the ceiling (or as high as you can). This keeps them out of the way and maximizes space. -
Baskets for the Win
Toss small items into baskets, and remove bulky packaging first. It saves space and makes everything easier to grab. -
Command Hooks for Cleaning Supplies
Hang towels, a mop, or a duster on the wall so they’re easy to access without cluttering your kitchen. I used to store towels under the sink, but bending over constantly got old. (Not lazy—just efficient!) -
Keep an Extra Chair Handy
Store a folding chair or small booster seat in your pantry for drop-in company. When our friends’ kids were younger, we always had an extra booster ready. Now that they’re older, we’ve moved it to the basement, but the chair is still there when we need it.
