I bet you can’t count how many times you’ve heard that before! When our second child was a toddler, I made a little rule in our home: my children were not allowed to say, “No fair!” It’s still a rule in this house today.
Call me crazy, but this simple rule has really helped our kids get along better. If something feels unfair, they have to find another way to express their feelings. Saying, “This isn’t even,” doesn’t count—so creativity and communication are encouraged instead!
How about you? Do you ever feel like life isn’t fair? I’ll be honest: I think life is fair.
As a child, I often felt like things weren’t fair. I had two older brothers—both smarter, more athletic, and with more friends. They were trusted to play outside more often and were given bigger scoops of ice cream. From my perspective, it felt like I was missing out. I spent a lot of time feeling frustrated and overlooked. In hindsight, that was a lot of wasted energy.
As children, we don’t always see the “why” behind decisions, especially when emotions run high. Often, someone will chime in, “Life isn’t fair!” Ugh. That isn’t the whole truth. Lean in and hear me:
Life is fair.
At some point, we grow up and learn to let go of the mindset that life isn’t fair. Not everything will feel equal, and we don’t always have the full story—that’s okay. God does. He shows up and makes sure things balance out, sometimes in ways we don’t immediately recognize.
Fairness might not come in the moment, but it comes. Sometimes it shows up in our earthly circumstances, other times it’s a reward reserved for Heaven. If you ask, God can give you the eyes to see it.
Today, you may feel overlooked or underappreciated—but tomorrow, blessings may come your way in ways you never expected.
When you feel like life isn’t fair, pause, pray, and ask God to help you see the fairness. It’s there.
