Goal Crushing: Herb and Flower Gardens

Two varieties of fresh basil in our herb bed.

I have always dreamed of having a fresh herb bed in the yard.  This is the year I’m crushing my goals, and so guess what? I’ve got one!

Thanks, Mr. Awesome!

The basil is doing exceptionally well.

Besides eating it by the handful, which is simply *delicious*, what would you do with it?

I reached out on Instagram and received many great ideas, you can check them out HERE.

The Canna bulbs grew! I can’t wait to see how big they’ll get.

My dad gave us some Canna bulbs to plant and they’re looking good! It’s so fun to see the new growth. I love their deep color.

I only planted flowers in the flower bed. That’s genius, huh? ha! I used a super random assortment of seeds that I impulse bought at every store I could this spring, bulbs I bought years ago and forgot about, and transplanted flowers from our yard (they were taking over our raspberries).

Here is my pro tip: If it’s cheap and produces a flower, plant it.

I felt like a free-spirited barefoot hippie gardener.

Pure happiness!

this.picture.is.full.of.weeds. Dang!

The flower bed has been untouched long enough that everything is really growing and the flowers are easy to identify.

I thought I hit the jackpot on some type of flower, as it is taking over the whole bed. It turns out after posting about it on IG it’s clearly a weed. A super invasive weed that I’d go pluck right now if it wasn’t 1:00 AM! I’m so thankful to have plant people in my Instagram tribe!

Weeds. Ding Dang Weeds!

Isn’t this so green, full, and healthy-looking? It’s too bad it’s a weed! Oh, and I really hope those bugs are gone by the time I go to rip these suckers out tomorrow! I am not fascinated by bugs at all.

PS. My plant-based eating and intermittent fasting habits have me down 15lbs. I know it’s only a number, but it’s so good to get my strength back post birthing babies, and dropping some poundage in the process feels good. Yes, my baby is 3. Don’t say nothin’ about it, K? 😉

That’s all!

I love you guys!

XOXOXO, QT

I have one plant growing in my flower garden right now that I still don’t know if it is a flower or a weed… Hopefully it all flowers but that’s what I get for buying a variety pack I guess. You don’t know what you’re going to get! Enjoy your herb and flower gardens!

You’re exactly right. You don’t know what you’re going to get! That’s a big part of the excitement. ha! I watched the little weeds grow assuming flowers for a long time. Once they were taking over everything I just had to know. If you send me a clear picture of the leaves I can try to figure out what it is. I bet Mary of Natural Plus would know too! She’s been so helpful.

Hey Friend! I am truly so glad that you’re here today!

At A Slightly Better Wife, I share about faith, homemaking, homeschooling, and marriage—along with my passion for creating a non-toxic, intentional home. Life isn’t about perfection, but I believe in making small, meaningful choices each day to do things slightly better than before.

My love for simple living and homemaking was deeply shaped by my grandparents. I have the best childhood memories of being in the kitchen with my Grandma Edna, learning the beauty of home-cooked meals and a well-tended home. My Grandpa Link’s storytelling and wisdom instilled in me the value of faith, family, and slowing down to listen during the little moments that make life rich. Their influence is woven into who I am today and I’m so grateful for that.

I’m a wife, a momma of 5, and a homemaker at heart. My husband and I met young, just days after my 18th birthday, and we quickly (like within a week) knew that forever was in our plans.

Together, we built our home on the edge of town, where we’re raising and homeschooling our children while embracing a simple, purposeful life in the city.

Here, you’ll find encouragement for your marriage, practical tips for homemaking, and inspiration to cultivate a home filled with faith and love. Whether you’re looking for a recipe, a fresh perspective, or just a place to feel understood, I hope you’ll stay awhile and explore.

Let’s pursue slightly better together!
