My oldest daughter has been wanting to learn how to sew, so this week we finally tackled her very first sewing machine project! We kept things simple, thrifty, and fun—perfect for building confidence.
Project 1: Doll Pajama Shirt
-
Start with a baby onesie that no longer fits your little one.
-
Cut it straight across just above the snaps, by the hip area.
-
Hem the raw edge with the sewing machine (a straight stitch works perfectly).
-
Slip it onto the doll—it’s now a pajama shirt!
Not only did we repurpose clothing we already had, but she got to practice sewing a straight line on fabric that wasn’t too tricky.
Project 2: Doll Tulle Tutu
-
Cut a piece of elastic to fit the doll’s waist.
-
Stitch the ends together to form a waistband.
-
Cut strips of tulle (the more the better!).
-
Tie the strips of tulle around the elastic until it’s nice and full.
And just like that—an adorable tutu for her doll!
The projects turned out cute, but the real win was the mother–daughter bonding time. Seeing her pride in creating something with her own hands was priceless.
If you’re introducing your child to sewing, keep the projects:
-
Simple (straight lines and easy fabrics)
-
Thrifty (repurpose what you already have)
-
Fun (let them pick the colors and materials)
Little by little, their skills (and confidence!) will grow.
