The laundry piles high on the
couch tonight
Not a maid to be seen.
My living room is consumed
Yes, it’s all for me.

Disclaimer: This is only two loads of laundry, usually there is FAR more. |
As a homemaker, I feel it’s my responsibility to make sure there are clean clothes available for everyone in the house.
I genuinely enjoy doing laundry! Everything except putting it away, that is. Luckily, having little helpers makes the process easier and even a bit fun.
Here’s a system that works well for our household:
Step 1 – Gather
Collect all the laundry in one spot.
Step 2 – Wash & Dry
Complete all the loads for the day.
Step 3 – Hang & Sort
As each load comes out of the dryer, hang up shirts immediately. The remaining items can be placed on a couch or a designated surface. Any items missed during the hanging step can be neatly draped or stacked.
Step 4 – Collect Throughout the Day
Allow all the clean laundry to gather in one spot. This saves multiple trips and prevents little hands from scattering items around the house.
Step 5 – Separate & Fold Strategically
Once all laundry is collected, separate into piles by household member and by type of item (e.g., towels, kitchen linens, small clothing items).
Fold towels, kitchen linens, and undergarments—mainly because they fit better in the drawers. The rest can be left in piles for older children to put away themselves.
Older children can take responsibility for putting away their own clothes. When they know their work needs to be done properly, they often take pride in caring for their own items.
All members of the household can pitch in to put away shared items, making the entire process faster and smoother.
Tips for a Smooth Laundry Routine:
-
Hang shirts immediately after drying—no ironing required.
-
Teach children to put away their own clothes. Start around 2–3 years old. Keep it simple—no rewards needed; it’s part of their responsibilities.
-
Purchase matching socks for each household member. This eliminates the time-consuming task of finding pairs. A set of identical socks for each person makes laundry simpler and faster.
Laundry doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With a simple system and everyone helping, it can be a smooth, manageable part of running a home.
