Last week, I whipped up a “tried and true” recipe from my grandma Edna’s binder of treasures for a friend’s birthday. There’s something so comforting about baking from recipes passed down through generations, isn’t there?
After the cake cooled, I grabbed a glass and cut it into perfect little circles, placing them in the bottom of plastic cups. My hubby jumped in to help while I made supper, he covered each cake cup with ice cream, drizzled chocolate and caramel sauce on top, and even inserted a straw down the center. The kids added the finishing touch with homemade flowers in the straws. Made with love.

For Real Red Devil’s Food Cake

1 2/3 cups gluten free all-purpose flour, sifted

1 1/2 cups sugar

1 1/4 tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

1/3 cup cocoa
-
1/2 cup soft butter
-
1 cup milk (2/3 cup + 1/3 cup)

2 eggs
-
1 tsp vanilla
Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Grease a 9×13 pan.

Sift together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa.

Add butter and 2/3 cup milk, and beat for 2 minutes.

Add the rest of the milk, eggs, and vanilla; beat until smooth.

Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 45 minutes.
